SKYWARN Training

The National Weather Service, Melbourne Office, has scheduled both a basic and advanced SKYWARN Spotter class for Saturday, June 6th, in Rockledge at the Brevard County Emergency Operations Center, 1746 Cedar Street.  These classes tend to fill up quickly, so if you’re interested, I recommend registering soon!  Check under “Training” to access the class schedule and registration links.

There are other counties where the classes are also offered, you will also see these listed on the schedule as well.  Classes are added periodically, so check the schedule frequently and hopefully you will find one that works with your schedule and location.

Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week

Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week was January 27th – 31st.  Topics covered during the week were lightning, marine hazards and rip currents, thunderstorms and tornadoes, hurricanes and flooding, and temperature extremes and wildfires.

On January 29th, we participated in the Statewide Tornado Drill as part of Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week.  At approximately 10:00 a.m., the National Weather Service issued a warning on the NOAA Alert Radio as a “routine weekly test” message.  The PCARS Weather Net was then activated on the 61 repeater and we had 9 stations check in and report on weather conditions.  It was a good drill and those who reported in did a great job!
